Ethics in Robotics
Ethics in AI and Robotics:
Robotics: robotics is an
extremely wide domain and one of the common words in this domain is “Robots”,
so to define this term we can say that it is a spectacular machine that is
capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically for the aim
of assisting the human in his daily activities in general. Even though this
kind of technology helped the humans in many aspects of their lives and
provided a lot of gadgets that facilitated many roles that were difficult for
humans to take or some hard and tiring work. An example of these gadgets are
phones, calculators, microwaves, printers, and computers, and now scientists
are developing a new generation of robots that sometimes might seem a bit scary
and confusing as they can be used for malicious purposes by certain Groups of
people from our society to feed their personnel selfish and naïve interest
(TechTarget, 2022).
One of their purposes might be
gaining more many than the usual which is the main purpose in most of the cases
of fraud that takes the path of the unethical setarious in the domain of AI in
robotics. For instance, some of the unethical risks that might be considered as
a threat in the future:
v Privacy
and Security: in a nutshell Data and information are an integral part of Artificial
Intelligence and robotics, so manipulating the data may create a danger to the
people or the businesses in some companies that are using this technology
(Unicef.org, 2022).
v Transparency
and opacity: this means that how are the data collected from different
individuals and resources being handled and used, this might develop some kind
of an untrust relationship between the user and the device, for that reason the
devices must contain algorithmic accountability, transparency, and the
community participation. In order to have a trustworthy device and keep the
privacy of the users (Dallas, Forbes.net, 2022).
v The
last point is Biases, algorithms may be affected by bias in a variety of ways,
one of them being the use of incorrect data or information units that are
irrelevant to the problem (Miguel González-Fierro, 2022).
Alongside these unethical issues
that are considered as an obstacle to build a trust between the users and the
technological companies, there are some regulations or in other words, a
framework that all the companies should respect and take into consideration.
This framework contains four components which are Trust, Transparency,
Fairness, and Privacy for all of the users that are using the technological
gadgets provided by the companies such as phones, cameras, computers, Drones,
and many other gadgets (Dallas, Forbes.net, 2022).
There are several unethical
actions happened already in the domain of AI and Robotics and also there are
some concerns about what will happen in the next years or in the far future,
while we are witnessing the huge progress in this field along with the
different organizations and companies. For instance, when the face recognition
was invented in the first place some dark-skin user experienced some difficulties
using this technology rather than the light-skin users found it extremely
effective, the reason for this problem is that the algorithm that was used in
the first place have some difficulties in detecting the facial features of the
dark-skin people. So here some individuals might take this situation as a
racist attitude and put the blame on the company (Miguel González-Fierro,
2022). A further example of the unethical action in AI and Robotics, according
to the multiple new stations around the world when the Cambridge Analytica
incident, in which 87 million Facebook accounts were taken and exploited to
influence the US election and the Brexit campaign. At this point, the different
users of these devices that were developed with the AI and Robotics technology
fear danger to their data privacy and even might be a threat to themselves
(Miguel González-Fierro, 2022).
